VMI TRUE VIEW
(Revsion 1.0)
Image File Viewing Utility for Windows 3.0
Please read "README.TXT" if you haven't already done so.
INTRODUCTION
The VMI True View utility allows Windows 3.0 users with Vermont Microsystems
X/Series 256, Cobra Elite Spectrum, or Design Master VGA graphics controllers
to view high quality, photrealistic images. VMI's proprietary RenderReady
technology allows for this display of vibrant, true color images by
compressing image file formats for display on the family of 8-bit/pixel
controllers.
Unlike methods applied in other viewing utilities, with VMI True View the
color palette is not changed for each image. This allows users to view
multiple images and renderings simultaneously without sacrificing image
quality.
INSTALLING VMI TRUE VIEW
After installing your Vermont Microsystems X/Series 256, Cobra Elite Spectrum,
or Design Master VGA graphics controller and Microsoft Windows 3.0, you are
ready to install True View.
1. Insert the True View diskette contained within your Vermont
Microsystems graphics controller's Hardware Installation manual in
your A drive. (If you use your B drive, substitute drive B for drive
A in the following instructions.)
2. Copy the file TRUEVIEW.EXE to your WINDOWS sub-directory.
Ex: copy A:\TRUEVIEW.EXE C:\WINDOWS
3. Unarchive the sample images provided with True View and place them
in a directory. This is accomplished by executing the following steps:
a. Create a directory. ex: md IMAGES
b. Change to new directory. ex: cd IMAGES
c. Unarchive the files on the diskette by typing: A:\IMAGES
The sample images will occupy approximately two megabytes of
space on your hard disk.
4. Inform the Windows 3.0 Program Manager where True View is located
with the following sequence of steps:
a. Enter Windows 3.0. ex: win
b. Choose FILE from the Program Manager Menu
c. Choose NEW
d. Choose Program Item
e. In the Command Line Field type: c:\WINDOWS\TRUEVIEW.EXE
f. Choose OK
True View is now installed under Windows 3.0 in your system.
USING VMI TRUE VIEW
Once VMI True View has been installed, the following tutorial illustrates how
to invoke the utility, and how to use it to view images.
1. Start TrueView by double-clicking on the "VMI" icon. A dialog box
will appear containing revision information.
2. Choose OK to close the Dialog Box. Another Dialog Box will
appear. Use this to select a file for viewing.
3. Select the drive and directory that the images were copied to
during True View installation. Be sure to follow the directory with a
backslash.
ex: C:\IMAGES\
4. Choose a file to view, for example blyfish.tga. The file will be
loaded. A 'progress-bar' will indicate how the load is progressing.
When loading is complete, the image will be displayed.
5. Select the Information option from the Image menu for a
description of the size of the image, the format of the file, and
memory requirements.
6. Choose Done to close the Information box and restore the image.
7. To view another image, select the Open option from the File menu.
Then choose the desired file, as in step 4 above. To view multiple
images, open another True View window by double-clicking on the "VMI"
icon again.
8. To leave the program, select Exit from the File menu, or double
click on the "-" symbol at the upper left of the window.
Currently with release 1.0, the ".TGA" and ".BMP" file formats are supported.
Future revisions will expand the set of allowable file formats, allow copying
to the clipboard, and convert color images to shades of grey. A source of
".TGA" files is the Truevision bulletin board:
